Ruben Alvarez

Ruben Alvarez was a former UPS delivery driver in Fresno, California, the father of Megan Ashley “Ash” Alvarez, Amy Alvarez, and Jack Alvarez, and the maternal grandfather of Julian Reyes. He briefly housed Zeek Reyes after Zeek’s father expelled him from the family home. Cardiac illness ended Ruben’s delivery work, and he reconnected with Julian in 2037 after years of exclusion by Julian’s paternal family.

Early Life and Background

Ruben raised his children after the sudden death of Mia, Ashley’s mother. Mia died when Ashley was approximately eight after returning to substance use following a period of abstinence. Her death left Ruben overwhelmed by grief and parenting responsibilities, intensely lonely, and depressed.

Before the 2002–03 school year, the Alvarez family moved to a home a few blocks from the Reyes family in Fresno High-Roeding. Ruben met Zeek’s father when he brought the family’s car to the independent repair shop the other man owned. The fathers became friends, and Zeek and Ashley met at the shop before beginning sixth grade together at Fremont Elementary School.

Career

Ruben worked as a UPS delivery driver. His routes involved driving, walking, and handling packages throughout the day. Fresno’s summer heat became increasingly difficult for him to tolerate, worsening his breathlessness and physical exhaustion. During the summer of Ashley’s pregnancy, he continued pushing himself at work despite worsening exertional symptoms and lost consciousness in his truck after pulling off his route.

By Ashley’s death, recurrent fainting made driving and completing a delivery route unsafe, and Ruben could no longer continue the UPS work. He endured a prolonged disability-benefits process and ultimately needed a lawyer before his claim was approved.

Personality

Ruben was cool, guarded, and stern, with a gruff, hard-sounding manner. He could respond to his children with anger or attempts to control them, and his grief and isolation did not erase the effects of those responses. His relationship with Ashley also included evident mutual love; they were not constantly at odds.

Ruben continued caring for his children through periods of profound exhaustion and often concealed his own distress until their immediate needs were met. Amy, Jack, and Amy’s boyfriend, Jonathan, knew how much he cared for his family. Julian and Kayla Rossi came to know that side of him after the family reunited.

By the reunion, the deaths of Mia, Ashley, and Zeek, his declining health and lost work, and years of separation from Julian had left Ruben deeply worn down.

Speech and Communication Patterns

Ruben’s guardedness and stern delivery could make conversations difficult even when he wanted closeness. He called Ashley “Megan” when correcting her, angry with her, or asserting his authority, although she disliked that name. During his first remembered meeting with Julian, nausea, anxiety, and diminished physical stamina made his replies shorter than usual.

Ruben could also acknowledge his failures directly. When Julian suggested that Zeek had understood Ruben’s wish to help him, Ruben answered, “You don’t know that.” After seeing Julian recoil, he clarified, “I’m not calling you a liar. I’m saying I don’t know what he understood from me. I should’ve asked him.”

Health and Disabilities

Conditions and Diagnoses

Ruben had hypertension for which he had been prescribed medication. Severe stress and sleep deprivation could leave him with a migraine and nausea, including after nights spent waiting for Ashley to return home. Exercise left him short of breath and winded. On one occasion, after he had paced through the night and following day, Amy noticed slight swelling in his lower legs and feet while he slept.

Ruben was subsequently diagnosed with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with dynamic left-ventricular outflow obstruction. Hypertension remained a concurrent condition rather than the sole explanation for his breathlessness, reduced exercise tolerance, and recurrent syncope. Heat, exertion, prolonged standing, and volume depletion could worsen his outflow obstruction and fainting, while intermittent orthostatic hypotension further reduced his tolerance for upright work.

Ruben’s depression began after Mia’s death and worsened after Ashley died. By Zeek’s death, his depression, recurrent fainting, and declining physical capacity prompted Amy and Jack to check on him repeatedly. Amy was approximately eighteen and terrified of leaving him alone; Jack was approximately fifteen.

Medical History and Crises

During the summer of Ashley’s pregnancy, Ruben became ill while driving his UPS truck. He pulled to the side of the road, turned on the hazard lights, and lost consciousness in the cab. A passerby who saw the uneven stop investigated and was shaking Ruben when he regained consciousness. The resulting emergency-department visit and cardiology workup led to the diagnosis of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

His health continued to decline after the diagnosis. By the time Zeek died and Julian was nearly three, recurrent syncope, impaired exertional capacity, and depression prevented Ruben from safely assuming sole care of his grandson. His inability to become Julian’s primary caregiver did not reflect indifference toward him.

Ruben’s diagnosis became new maternal family medical history for Julian during their reunion. Julian’s recurrent fainting was not considered fully explained by POTS, making Ruben’s potentially inherited cardiac condition relevant to further evaluation. The family history did not establish that Julian had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or resolve the cause of his syncope.

Daily Management and Equipment

Amy and Jack regularly reminded Ruben to check his blood pressure. After one prolonged period of wakefulness, Amy coaxed him into bed and checked on him approximately ten minutes later, finding him asleep and snoring with an eye mask on.

By 2037, Ruben tired easily and often rested with his feet elevated in a powered recliner that Amy and Jonathan had bought him. The stress-related nausea he had experienced while his children were young had also become more intense. On the morning of Julian’s first visit, he did not want breakfast and snapped at Amy and Jack over it; later, he and Julian were both reluctant to eat the sandwiches Amy brought out, leading them to discuss their illnesses.

Relationship to His Body

Ruben’s worsening health interfered with his work, caregiving, and attempts to reconnect with Julian. At their first remembered meeting, he was angry that his body was failing him on a day he wanted to spend with his grandson. He remained nauseated but did not want to interrupt the visit to say he felt unwell after Julian had traveled from Los Angeles.

Habits, Routines, and Daily Life

When Ashley left home without telling him or stayed out overnight, Ruben stayed awake until he knew where she was. He continued caring for Amy and Jack through the following day and made sure they were safe and fed. Once their immediate needs were met, he concealed his own collapse; he sometimes cried in the shower until exhaustion overtook him and he fell asleep. Although the Brown family could give Ashley a safe place, Ruben had no one who took over the practical work or gave him room to grieve openly.

During one morning when Ashley stayed at the Brown home, Ruben made burgers for Amy and Jack. Amy hugged him, snuggled against him, and told him that he looked tired.

Family and Core Relationships

Megan Ashley Alvarez

Ruben and Ashley had a rough relationship in which conflict coexisted with obvious love. Ashley was fiercely protective of him and had punched someone for insulting him. Ruben’s anger and attempts to control her affected their relationship, and he later regretted those behaviors. Amy sometimes accused Ashley of failing to notice or care about their father’s struggles; the sisters argued about him while he was away or working late, but Amy’s accusation reflected her own understanding rather than an absence of Ashley’s love.

Ashley tried to tell Ruben that something was wrong in the Reyes home, although she may only have alluded to the problem rather than explaining it directly. Ruben believed she was exaggerating. After Ashley and Zeek died, he carried profound guilt for dismissing her warning and failing to recognize Zeek’s danger sooner.

Amy Alvarez and Jack Alvarez

Amy was thirteen and Jack was ten when Ashley was fifteen. Both children monitored their father’s health, and their concern intensified after Ashley’s death and as his fainting continued. Amy’s physical affection and Jack’s repeated checks on him remained part of their family life alongside Ruben’s grief and difficult behavior.

Jack lived alone for a period, then returned to Ruben’s home because he preferred living with his father. By 2037, Jack paid the household bills while Amy took care of Ruben’s supplies. Jack feared how Ruben would react to learning that he was gay.

Zeek Reyes

Ruben genuinely liked Zeek and continued to call him a good boy after his death. Although angry about Ashley’s pregnancy, he opposed his friend’s decision to expel Zeek after Julian’s birth. Their disagreement ended the fathers’ friendship, and Ruben let Zeek stay briefly before Zeek used his pregnancy savings to obtain a studio apartment.

While Zeek stayed in the Alvarez home, Ruben found him at the kitchen table recording Julian’s feeding and reflux in a notebook while holding the baby upright against his shoulder. Zeek declined Ruben’s offer to hold Julian because the baby had just settled after spitting up. Ruben took offense, and Zeek apologized. Ruben made breakfast the next morning rather than discussing the exchange; years later, he told Julian that he regretted not making himself easier for Zeek to talk to.

Julian Reyes

Ruben knew Julian during infancy. After Zeek’s death, Zeek’s father and older brother Marco used their control over Julian’s upbringing and access to exclude Ruben and the wider Alvarez family. Zeek’s father remained angry about Ruben’s opposition to the expulsion. Ruben’s illness, grief, and limited financial resources prevented him from sustaining a fight for access, and Julian grew up without a remembered relationship with his maternal family.

On March 20, 2037, Ruben, Amy, and Jack watched the livestream of the ‘’I Am Still Me’’ premiere from Ruben’s Fresno home. They prepared popcorn and other snacks, watched the three-hour documentary, and remained for the interviews with Julian afterward. Amy then emailed Resonance Films to contact Julian. The message remained buried in the company’s general inbox until he found it and replied nearly two months later.

Several weeks after Julian and Amy began corresponding, Kayla drove Julian from Los Angeles to Ruben’s home for his first remembered visit. Julian had asked to meet privately at the house rather than in a restaurant. Seeing him brought Ruben grief and a desire to embrace him despite his guarded manner, as well as renewed anger at the paternal relatives who had kept them apart.

During the visit, Julian showed Ruben a photograph of a page from Zeek’s health notes, including the entry “Kept him up after. Better.” Ruben recognized the note and asked to see more of Zeek’s writing later. He also remembered that Julian wanted to ask about Ashley, and Julian asked what she had called him as a baby.

Ruben gave Julian the information the medical examiner had released after Zeek’s death. It did not identify a definitive cause or resolve whether an arrhythmia or aspiration had killed Zeek. Julian became especially close to Ruben and loved him dearly; their relationship remained active after the reunion.

Kayla Rossi

Public photographs of Kayla protecting Julian from crowding paparazzi reminded Ruben of Ashley. He considered the comparison somewhat silly because the women were different, but recognized their shared refusal to let others treat access to Julian as an entitlement. The photographs reassured him that someone beside Julian noticed when he was overwhelmed and intervened. Kayla later accompanied Julian to the Alvarez home and came to know Ruben’s care for his family through continued contact.

Memorable Quotes

“I wasn’t perfect and I never will be, and I’m pissed, sure, but she’s still my daughter, and he should still be your son.” Ruben said this to Zeek’s father when opposing Zeek’s expulsion after Julian’s birth.
